About the YouTube Tag Generator
Tags are optional words and phrases you add to a YouTube video in YouTube Studio. This free YouTube tag generator turns your video title into a ranked list of about 25 tags, saving you the time of brainstorming them yourself.
Type your video title and click Generate tags. The AI returns tags that aim to balance broad terms with more specific phrases, ordered from most to least important. Click any tag to copy it, or use Copy all (comma-separated) to paste the full set into YouTube Studio in one go.
The built-in 500-character check. YouTube limits the total length of a video's tags to 500 characters. Under the list, the tool counts the characters of all tags joined with commas and shows a total out of 500. If the total runs over, the counter turns red, and you should delete tags from the bottom of the list, where the lowest-ranked suggestions are, until you fit.
A worked example. Enter "5 ChatGPT prompts that 10x productivity." You get tags along the lines of chatgpt prompts, chatgpt productivity, ai productivity tips, how to use chatgpt and best chatgpt prompts, plus some longer variations. If the counter reads, say, 540/500, remove the last few tags and paste the rest into the Tags field.
Keep expectations realistic. YouTube has said tags play a minimal role in discovery compared with your title, thumbnail and description; they mainly help with common misspellings and ambiguous topics. The tags here are AI suggestions without search-volume data, so use them as a quick finishing step and spend most of your optimization effort on the title, thumbnail and the video itself.
How to use it
- Enter your video title. Type the title of your YouTube video into the "Video title" box.
- Click Generate tags. The AI returns about 25 tags ranked from most to least important.
- Check the character counter. Make sure the total stays within YouTube's 500-character tag limit shown below the list.
- Trim the lowest-ranked tags if needed. Remove tags from the end of the list until the total fits.
- Copy the tags into YouTube Studio. Use Copy all (comma-separated) and paste them into the Tags field of your video.
Frequently asked questions
How many tags does the YouTube tag generator create?
The AI is asked for 25 tags ranked by importance. The exact number shown can vary slightly from run to run, and the header above the list displays how many came back.
What does the 500-character counter in the YouTube tag generator measure?
It adds up the length of all generated tags joined by commas, matching how they are copied. YouTube limits a video's tags to 500 characters in total, so if the counter turns red, delete the lowest-ranked tags at the end of the list until it fits.
Do YouTube tags still help videos rank?
YouTube's own guidance says tags play a minimal role in a video's discovery and are mostly useful for commonly misspelled words or terms. Your title, thumbnail, description and audience retention matter far more, so treat tags as a small finishing touch.
Does the YouTube tag generator use real YouTube search data?
No. The tags are AI suggestions based on your title; the tool does not fetch search volume or competition from YouTube. Use YouTube's search autocomplete or your channel's analytics to check which terms viewers actually use.
Should I paste every tag from the YouTube tag generator into my video?
Only the ones that accurately describe the video. Remove anything off-topic or misleading, since YouTube's policies discourage excessive or deceptive tags, and keep the most relevant, highest-ranked tags first.
