About the Password Generator

The Password Generator creates random passwords from the character types you choose. Drag the Length slider anywhere from 8 to 64 characters and switch Uppercase, Lowercase, Numbers and Symbols on or off. A new password appears with every change, Generate new gives you another at the same settings, and Copy to clipboard puts it straight into your clipboard.

Where the randomness comes from. Passwords are generated in your browser with crypto.getRandomValues(), the cryptographically secure random number generator built into modern browsers, not the predictable Math.random(). Rejection sampling keeps every character in the pool equally likely, and the password is never sent to our server or stored by the tool.

How strong is it? With all four sets on, each character is drawn from 88 possibilities: 26 uppercase letters, 26 lowercase, 10 digits and 26 symbols. At the default length of 16 that works out to 16 × log2(88) ≈ 103 bits of entropy, far beyond the reach of brute-force guessing. The Weak / Fair / Strong / Ironclad label is a simpler rule of thumb based on length and which character types appear, so treat the entropy math as the real measure.

Who it's for. Anyone setting up a new account, changing a password after a breach notice or creating credentials for a client project. If you juggle dozens of logins, pair it with a password manager so every account gets a unique password.

Example. At the defaults (16 characters, all sets on) you might get something like q7#Vm!x2Lr{9Tb_e — about 103 bits, labeled Ironclad. If a site rejects symbols, switch Symbols off: 16 characters from the remaining 62 still give about 95 bits. Each character is drawn independently, so a password isn't guaranteed to contain every type you selected; if a site insists on a digit or symbol, glance at the result and click Generate new if one is missing.

How to use it

  1. Set the length. Drag the Length slider to any value from 8 to 64 characters; 16 is the default.
  2. Choose character types. Toggle Uppercase, Lowercase, Numbers and Symbols to match the site's rules.
  3. Check the strength label. The bar under the password rates it Weak, Fair, Strong or Ironclad.
  4. Generate another if needed. Click Generate new to get a fresh password with the same settings.
  5. Copy to clipboard. Click Copy to clipboard and paste it into the sign-up form or your password manager.

Frequently asked questions

How random are the passwords from this Password Generator?

They use crypto.getRandomValues(), the browser's cryptographically secure random source, with rejection sampling so no character is favored over another. That's the same kind of randomness security software relies on, unlike Math.random(), which isn't designed for secrets.

How long should a password from the Password Generator be?

Longer is better: with all four sets on, each extra character adds about 6.5 bits of entropy. The default of 16 characters (about 103 bits) is a strong choice for most accounts, and you can go up to 64 for anything stored in a password manager.

Does the Password Generator guarantee at least one number and one symbol?

No. Each character is picked at random from all the sets you've switched on, so a short password can occasionally miss one type. If a site requires a specific character type, check the result and click Generate new if it's missing.

What does the Ironclad rating mean in the Password Generator?

The meter adds the password's length plus 1 point for an uppercase letter, 1 for a digit and 2 for a symbol. Under 10 is Weak, 10–13 Fair, 14–17 Strong and 18 or more Ironclad, so the default 16-character password with all sets scores 20. It's a quick guide, not a precise entropy measurement.

Which symbols can the Password Generator include?

The symbol set is ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - = [ ] { } | ; : , . < > ? (26 characters). If a website rejects some of these, switch Symbols off and add a few characters of length to make up the difference.
