About the PDF to Word Converter

The PDF to Word Converter pulls the text out of a PDF and saves it as a Word document you can edit. Choose a PDF or drop it on the page, click Convert & download .doc, and a file with the same name ending in .doc downloads to your device. Open it in Microsoft Word, edit freely, and use Save As if you need a .docx.

It runs in your browser. The conversion uses pdf.js, Mozilla's open-source PDF engine, loaded into the page. Your file is read and processed locally and is never uploaded, which matters for contracts, payslips and anything else confidential.

What you get, and what you don't. This is text extraction, not a layout-perfect conversion. The words come across in the order they're stored in the PDF (usually reading order), with each page becoming its own paragraph. Fonts, images, tables, columns, headers and footers, and the original line breaks are not kept, so expect to reformat. It's ideal when you need the words — quoting a report, reviving an old résumé, editing a draft someone sent as a PDF — and less suited to documents where the layout is the point, like brochures or forms.

Example. A client sends a 3-page proposal as proposal.pdf and you need to edit the scope section. Drop it in and click Convert: proposal.doc downloads with three paragraphs, one per page, containing all the selectable text. Copy the scope paragraph into your own template, add line breaks where you need them, and you're editing in minutes instead of retyping.

Scanned PDFs won't work. If a PDF is a photo or scan of paper, it holds images rather than text, and the converter will tell you no selectable text was found — it doesn't do OCR. Quick test: if you can't highlight words in your PDF viewer, this tool can't extract them. Files up to 100 MB are accepted, one at a time, and password-protected PDFs need the password removed first.

How to use it

  1. Choose your PDF. Drop a PDF onto the box or click Choose file to select one.
  2. Confirm the file. The file name and size appear in the box once it's accepted.
  3. Click Convert & download .doc. The text is extracted in your browser and a .doc file downloads automatically.
  4. Open it in Word. Open the .doc in Microsoft Word to edit, then Save As .docx if you need that format.
  5. Tidy up the formatting. Add headings, line breaks and any images or tables that weren't carried over.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the PDF to Word Converter lose my formatting and images?

It extracts only the text layer of the PDF, not its layout. Fonts, images, tables, columns and line breaks aren't reproduced, and each page arrives as one paragraph, so plan to reformat the document in Word.

Does the PDF to Word Converter work on scanned documents?

No. Scanned or photographed PDFs contain images of text, and the converter has no OCR, so it reports that no selectable text was found. If you can't highlight words in the PDF, you'll need an OCR tool instead.

Why does the PDF to Word Converter download a .doc file instead of .docx?

The tool builds a simple Word-compatible .doc file in your browser. Open it in Microsoft Word and use Save As to turn it into a .docx if your workflow requires that format.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF to Word with this converter?

Not directly. Open the PDF with its password, print or save it to a new unprotected PDF, and convert that copy instead.

Can the PDF to Word Converter handle several PDFs at once?

No, it converts one PDF at a time, up to 100 MB. Convert each file separately, or merge them first with the PDF Merger and convert the combined file.
